Heritage Park

Where in Calgary can you ride a train, a boat, a horse-drawn carriage and a Ferris wheel all in the same day? Heritage Park allows you to take a step back time… you can “walk” through the 1860s, 1880s, 1910s and 1930s.

When we were invited to check out Heritage Park I thought we would need a couple of hours to roam around a historical site that was native to Calgary. I expected to see a blacksmith and a bakery and that the overall place would have a country feel. Well to my surprise I can honestly say I’ve never experienced a location like this! I’ve never been to historical places like this before! Heritage Park truly is a world class tourist attraction and educational facility!

Heritage Park is Canada’s largest living historical village. How big is it, you ask?  The park stretches over 127 acres and overlooks the beautiful Glenmore Reservoir and Rocky Mountains. As for trying to plan what to do there… well we can’t even begin to list everything that there is. Here are some of our trip highlights:

Ride an antique steam locomotive – This train takes visitors from one end of the park to the other.

Take a stroll down Gasoline Alley – This “shop” boasts a collection of antique cars and trucks, signage and even a 1942 plane hanging from the rafters!

Ride the Ferris Wheel and other old fashioned carnival rides.

Enjoy a treat from one of the many restaurants and shops!

Play at the carnival, visit the blacksmith, take a ride on the Paddle-wheeler…Plus hundreds of other activities!

I also had to include a map, just so you could see how big this place was. Hint… bring comfortable shoes, lots of water and be ready to play!

We made the error of only scheduling a couple hours at the park. BIG MISTAKE. Next time we will plan to spend the day there. There’s so much to explore that we don’t want to be rushed and don’t want to miss anything! Check out a quick video showing some of the highlights of our trip:
