Tips for Finding a Pet-Friendly Hotel

canterra-suites-hotelWhen traveling with your pet, it’s imperative that you know in advance which hotels are pet-friendly. The last thing you want to do is show up and find out that you can’t bring your furry friend inside with you. Before traveling with pets, it’s important to make sure that you do your research, and find out not only which hotels are pet-friendly, but also, which ones offer the best amenities for pet owners. Today we’re offering up a few tips to finding the best pet-friendly hotel downtown for your Edmonton vacation. Let’s get started.

Do Online Research

The first step in the process is to go online and check the amenities of the hotels in downtown Edmonton (or other areas) that you are interested in staying at. If a hotel is pet-friendly, this will be listed on the amenities page. One of the best pet-friendly hotels in downtown Edmonton is Canterra Suites Hotel.

Contact Booking Agents

If you don’t see the information you’re looking for in the amenities section, you can contact the hotel booking agents to ask if their locations are pet-friendly. The pet policies can vary between hotels, with some allowing pets in all rooms, some having specific rooms for pet owners, and some only allowing service animals. If you have an exotic pet, make sure that you ask about this because some pet-friendly hotels only allow cats and dogs.

Search Travel Directories

You can also search through online travel directories to find hotels that allow pets. Some of the best directories to use include PetsWelcome.com and DogFriendly.com. There’s also an AAA guide called, “Traveling with Your Pet: The AAA PetBook” that you might want to check out.

Ask about Special Deposits

Some hotels may charge a special deposit or fee if you are traveling with your pet. It’s important to ask about this at the time of booking, so you don’t have any surprises when you arrive at your destination, whether it be downtown Edmonton or another location.

Size and Breed Restrictions

Unfortunately, there are some breeds that people think are dangerous, and therefore, some hotels will not allow people to stay with their pets if they own these breeds. If you have a large-breed dog, make sure that you ask about breed and size restrictions before booking your stay.

Hotel Requirements

Some hotels have very specific requirements when it comes to their pet policies. For instance, they may require the dog to be crated when you’re not in the room. Knowing this before you travel is important so you can make sure that you have the proper equipment with you.

Other Things to Consider

Before you take off for your vacation, make sure that you are completely prepared for traveling with your pet. Check to ensure that the city you’re visiting has no restrictions against your pet’s breed. Clean up after your pet, no matter where you are, and make sure that the pet, especially large-breed dogs, are well socialized. You should also take steps to keep your pet comfortable during travel. If this is a new experience for them, talk to your vet about how you can keep them calm and relaxed.
